Phishing is a type social engineering where an attacker deceives an individual into clicking on a malicious link, image, attachment. The goal is to trick the victim into revealing information or to direct them to a fake website that appears legitimate. These attacks can be very convincing.
When we discuss this I first want to mention it takes between 10 and 30 minutes to replicate a a legitimate source. To replicate that website perfectly, using tools that automates the process for the phisher. That's not a long time to create one of the reasons its being used a lot also because people are just not aware what phishing exactly is.

Easily noticeable by short URLS, spelling mistakes.
Advanced ones
Not easily recognizable because they will use 'Unicode' for this which makes the link exactly the same for the human eye. These are also called homograph attacks.

Smishing is a blend of SMS
SMS = Short Message Service
Then blend it with the word phishing and that's where the term comes from.
