When we discuss this I first want to mention it takes between 10 and 30 minutes to replicate a a legitimate source. To replicate that website perfectly, using tools that automates the process for the phisher. That's not a long time to create one of the reasons its being used a lot also because people are just not aware what phishing exactly is.

Malicious links are crafted to look legitimate.
easy ones
Easily noticeable by short URLS, spelling mistakes.
Advanced ones
Not easily recognizable because they will use 'Unicode' for this which makes the link exactly the same for the human eye. These are also called homograph attacks.

Smishing uses text messages to lure you into clicking malicious links or providing personal information also can be done by phone calls.
Smishing is a blend of SMS
SMS = Short Message Service
Then blend it with the word phishing and that's where the term comes from.
